Journal Notes from Reading "Evolve Your
Brain" by Joe Dispenza
Recent research shows
that we may have more control over our DNA than we previously thought. In
his book ‘Evolve Your Brain’, Joe Dispenza explains in simple language
exactly how this is possible. He shows how our emotions cause chemical
reactions throughout our whole body. These emotions come from our
experiences, whether remembered or imagined, or real and immediate. They are
the result of perceived needs and threats in our environment, both inside
(the mind-body) and outside (the material world).
As our senses gather
information about our environment, the mind sees and evaluates these
impressions mostly through the filter of past experiences we remember or
imagine. This impacts the brain physically, setting off a cascade of
chemicals throughout the body. Every cell we have is connected to the neural
network of the brain. Dispenza says “All our cells are touched by neural
tissue. They are continuously spying on our thoughts. As our brain changes
by even a few circuits our cells will receive a different neurological
signal and they will begin to modify themselves.”
Cells produce the
special protein that forms our DNA. This is how, over several generations,
families develop and pass on specific inherited traits. These traits can be
not only physical, (how we walk or laugh) but attitudinal as well (shyness
belligerence, calmness etc.)
Many of us use these
hand-me-down traits as excuses for negative behaviour, for example, “I can’t
lose weight because the women in my family are always fat”.
In his book, ‘The
Biology of Belief’, Bruce Lipton talks about the concept of Memes. A meme is
an idea, thought or belief in one’s mind. These ideas come from our parents
and grandparents, friends and society, and as we grow they become the truth
for us. We never question them. An example is the idea that women are able
to do only certain kinds of work. In fact, over the last sixty years, women
have proven that this belief is a lie. Memes behave like a virus of the
mind. They duplicate, infiltrate and spread. They go undetected unless they
are examined with the microscope of awareness.
Dispenza shows that by
conscious awareness, specifically through the use of our frontal lobe, we
can change ourselves within our own lifetime, and more quickly than one
could imagine. Our brain cannot distinguish between real and imagined
events. If we always mentally rehash negative ideas and events we are
sending the brain and hence the body a message of hopelessness, anger and
defeat. Those spying cells get the message loud and clear. They deliver to
our lives pain, illness, depression and lethargy.
However, we can change
these patterns of the mind and body. By spending time every day, vividly
visualizing the life we want to live, or the new behaviour to replace a
negative habit, we engage our frontal lobe. It will orchestrate all the
other areas of the brain into creating the neural network to support our new
behaviour. We replace the old outdated memes with new ideas. We replace old
neural patterns with new ones that serve our needs today. We must be willing
to commit our self to the time it takes to do this. Dispenza recommends an
hour each day for at least 21 days. Or “as long as it takes.”
To begin to change
your life you must have a clear, detailed plan of what it is you want. You
must look at what you have now, and picture exactly how it will be
different. You must collect as much information as you can about the new
you. Read books and magazines, look at and collect pictures, observe others
with traits you admire, watch movies and documentaries that show your new
life. Then visualize, with feeling, yourself behaving the way you want the
new you to be. Your cells, spying on the thoughts in your brain will begin
to deliver the life you imagine and the habits you need to succeed.
In my new program
‘Ancestral Echoes’, you will discover what those hand-me-down memes are and
how they are affecting your life. Working with this program will help you
plan your new habits and behaviours.
